1. How AutoProctor Works

1.1. What is AutoProctor?
Proctoring involves ensuring test takers don't cheat on tests. With online tests, this is a challenge. You need to get on a video call with the test taker, and monitor them. This is complicated, especially if there are many test takers.

AutoProctor automates this for you by performing all the monitoring and then producing a report of possible violations during the test.
1.2. How does AutoProctor monitor the test taker?
Before the test taker starts the test, AutoProctor gains access to their camera, mic, the screen they are on, etc. So, for example, if the test taker invites a friend to help them with the test, or gets audio clues, or opens Google or ChatGPT, AutoProctor gets notified.

AutoProctor calls these events violations. When the test taker finishes the test, AutoProctor produces a report factoring in all these violations.
1.3. What else does AutoProctor track?
In addition to the above, AutoProctor can take random photos throughout the test, force the test to happen on full screen, etc. If you use Socratease within AutoProctor, you can disable copy-pasting of text, automatically submit the quiz if the tab is switched 'n' times, etc.

For a full list of what AutoProctor can track, click here.
1.4. What does the AutoProctor report contain?
You can see a sample report here. As you can see from the report, AutoProctor shows what violation occurred, at what time and for how long. It also shows recorded evidence for that violation. For example, if the test taker switched to a different tab or application, you can see a screenshot of what they switched to.

Also, the report shows a Trust Score. This is a score between 0% and 100%, which is calculated based on the type, frequency and duration of the violations. The lower the trust score, the more likely AutoProctor thinks the test taker cheated on the test.
1.5. What is the minimum Trust Score a test taker must have?
This is very important to remember! Please do not base important exam and scoring decisions on the Trust Score automatically. The Trust Score is only a guide. It is not a 100% accurate measure as there could be lots of false positives. For example, if the test taker's room gets dark, AutoProctor won't be able to detect their face and think they are cheating.

So, we always recommend that you actually review the evidence and decide if the test taker cheated or not. The image and audio files can prove very useful.
1.6. Why should I use AutoProctor if I can't even trust the Trust Score!
We understand how much easier your lives can be if you could rely on the Trust Score 100%. But, automated solutions can only go so far. AutoProctor automates the monitoring. But, the decision-making should still be done by you.

Also, it is important to remember that, when test takers know that they are being monitored, they are much less likely to cheat. Teachers have actually told us that their classroom averages have reduced after they started using AutoProctor ;) So, trust us, AutoProctor works. We just recommend that you don't base important decisions on the Trust Score directly. Review the evidence!

2.2. How do I use AutoProctor as a test creator?
Your usage of AutoProctor depends on what you are using for your tests. If you visit our homepage, you can see how to use AutoProctor with Google Forms, Microsoft Forms, etc.

But, the basic steps are: (i) you create a Test; (ii) you add that Test to AutoProctor; (iii) you share the AutoProctor Test link with the test takers; (iv) they attempt the Test on the AutoProctor website; (v) you review the Test Attempt Report and decide if they cheated or not.
2.3. Can I message the test taker during the test?
No, you cannot interact with the test taker via AutoProctor. They attempt the test on their own and you get the report at the end of the test.
2.4. Can I see a video recording of the entire test?
No. We do not even record the video of the test taker. The proctoring happens on the user's device real-time, not on a server. That is, it isn't like we record a video and then perform some analysis on it. As and when AutoProctor detects a violation during the test taking, it logs it real-time. So, even if we wanted to, we couldn't share the video with you.
