How We Store Your Data
How We Store Your Data
  • Background
  • AI for Good
  • No Server Processing

  • Security Audit
  • Background

Hello there. Like most websites, we have a Privacy Policy, which you can find on the website. But, unlike most websites, we are dealing with images and audio recordings of users. More significantly, these recordings are of candidates, many of whom may be younger than 18 years of age.

Therefore, it is critical that AutoProctor is transparent about its Privacy Policy. So, we want to summarise our philosophy in a more informal and less legalistic manner. You must always refer to the Privacy Policy for an authoritative reference. This is us trying to decode the Privacy Policy in our words.

You control what is stored: AutoProctor is highly configurable. As the test creator, you decide if we even store the audio and visual data of your candidates. If you choose not to have the data collected, we do not even capture images, audio files, etc. You control how long the data are stored for: If you have configured AutoProctor to capture audio and visual data, once the test is finished, you can clear each student’s data with a single click. All the data are then wiped off, whoosh! In fact, we would be delighted if you clear the data, because it saves us data storage costs! We don’t sell data: We are not a free service. As you can see from our Pricing, we charge for each Test Attempt. This is a deliberate decision because we don’t want to have to resort to selling data to sustain ourselves. Many free services abound. But there, your data (and your candidates’ data) are most likely being sold.

  • AI for Good

AI gets a bad rep these days. We believe that AI can be enormously useful if it is decentralised and its implementation is transparent. Below, we explain what we mean by decentralised and transparent, in the context of AutoProctor.
  • No Server Processing

Most web technologies process and store data on their servers. For example, if you upload a photo onto Facebook, software and algorithms on Facebook's servers process and store your photos.

With AutoProctor, most of the processing happens right on the user's device. This is why it takes 10-15 seconds for AutoProctor to start. The software needs to be set up on the user's computer or phone.

What this means is that we are not storing visual and audio data on our servers. If you choose to store these evidence, the files go straight from the user's browser to a cloud storage service. Once you have reviewed the evidence, you can delete all the data with a click of a button. And, all the data are erased from the cloud. And, they weren't there on our servers to begin with, remember? So, no audio or visual data will persist.

You could go one step further and choose to not store any of this evidence, even on a cloud service. This means that if AutoProctor detects, say, that there are two people looking at the test, it will just make a note of it in our database. It won't capture a photo of this. So, there won't be any data to erase.

  • Low Costs

If you have looked at our Pricing, you will see that we are hundreds of times less expensive than most other Proctoring solutions. For most web technologies, the primary expense is server costs. Because we don't do our processing on servers, we can save enormously on costs, which we pass on to our customers.

  • Security Audit

The other advantage with doing our processing on the browser and not on our servers is that it can be easily audited by anyone. Anyone with a basic understanding of web technologies can try the demo test on our site and be fully satisfied that what we are saying is true. Indeed, we invite people to try it!
